1.3 Policies, Procedures, Programs & Funding
Candidates research, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, programs and funding strategies to support implementation of the shared vision represented in the school, district, state, and federal technology plans and guidelines. Funding strategies may include the development, submission, and evaluation of formal grant proposals. (PSC 1.3/ISTE 1c)
Artifact:
Technology Integration Grant
Reflection:
This artifact is a Technology Grant Proposal that represents a need for online technology tools that align with our school’s shared vision. These tools will provide students with an authentic learning experience catered to their individual needs. The artifact illustrates how the use of digital programs can meet English Language Arts (ELA) writing standards, ISTE Standards for Students (2019, ISTE), and aligns with our schools shared vision for technology integration and personalized learning.
With preparing to write the technology grant proposal, I wanted to ensure that the project would be appropriate for all students and provide the academic rigor expected in learning experiences. I spent many weeks researching best practices, various reading programs and digital resources specific to integrating technology into ELA. Through my research, I came across the programs Read &Write for Google Chrome (assist with building reading and writing skills and includes tools such as read aloud, text prediction, and summary highlighters) and Spiral (interact with other students, build communication skills, practice writing, and creating pictures to use for explanations to answer topic questions). I found that these online resources provide students with the support needed to develop the comprehension skills required to successfully master reading and writing for student learners including English Language Learners (ELL) and students with a disability. By examining the policies of the program, I was able to recommend strategies for how this technology integration can work to assist the diversity of learners at our school.
In order to implement the programs, I will start by giving Developmental Reading Assessments (DRAs). These assessments will be administered at the being of each quarter to measure where every student’s current fluency, vocabulary, summarizing, and comprehension skills are. Then I will instruct students on a writing topic and allow them to free write on Spiral so that I can review their writings and determine what skills to focus on for mastery of content standards. I will make sure to sign up for the laptop carts so that students will have equal access to Spiral and Read & Write for Google Chrome. They will have a set schedule and will be expected to follow all rules and be responsible digital learners. Students will continue to practice modeled writing skills and use Read & Write for Google Chrome as resource for support. Finally, students will complete a final writing using Spiral where both students and teacher can share feedback of students’ “glows and grows.” Depending on the students’ needs, they will either physically type their writings or verbally share their thoughts using a recording on Spiral.
Completing this artifact taught me that researching and writing a grant proposal is not as scary or challenging as it sounds. It was nice learning the process of how to properly write a grant and I enjoyed learning about different organizations that support student-centered learning. To improve this artifact in the future, I would include funding for each grade level in order to reach a larger amount of students academically.
This artifact represents my ability to impact school improvement by the gained knowledge and skills I have to research, recommend and implement strategies that supports the shared technology vision of our school. I am able to review current policies, procedures and programs and can utilize information to request funding needed to aid in continuous development that will allow teachers to impact student learning specifically in ELA. This project can also impact the school being that it is higher on the LoTi level because it is student-centered (2018, LoTi Connection). The focus is clearly surrounded by the academic development of every child. Students will practice being leaders by creating their own writings and successfully completing content standards aligned with it. They will engage in authentic learning by writing pieces that are relevant and hold special meaning to them. Assessing the impact of this artifact can occur through student achievement data drawn from DRA scores, common assessments, and the Georgia Milestones Exam.
